PDFs are some of the most popular types of files on the internet. It is easy to delete PDF pages, and convert PDFs into other file formats, and vice versa. But many people don’t know why they take up so much space. To understand how PDFs work, you need to look at how they’re created and what they contain.
Non-compressed image data
Compression is used to reduce the size of a file. The most common types are lossless and lossy compression. Lossless compression reduces the size of a file without losing any data, whereas lossy compression does lose some information in order to make files smaller.
According to the professionals at Adobe Acrobat, “Lossy images tend to be much larger than lossless images because they’re trying to save as much visual information as possible while still allowing for small file sizes.” A good example of this would be an image with many color variations (such as a photo) versus an image that has few color variations (like line art).
Large format prints
There are a few different types of large print formats. The most common is called a poster, which can be as big as 4 feet by 4 feet. However, there are other sizes available as well. Large format prints are often printed on either gloss or matte paper, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the image quality will be any worse than what you might see in an ordinary magazine or book page: A large format print is still just as sharp and clear.
Extensive use of color
In addition to formatting, color is used extensively in PDFs. Color can be used to set the mood of your document and help the reader understand what they’re reading. For example, you might choose a light blue color to represent success or achievement, while red would work well for warnings or errors.
Color also helps differentiate between different sections of your document, making it easier for readers who skim through documents quickly or have trouble focusing on one particular section at a time.

One of the reasons PDF files are so large is that they’re made up of layers. Layers are used to create complex documents, which often have multiple images or different pieces of text on them. Layers allow for a greater level of customization and flexibility when designing your own PDFs.
The first and most common reason for large pdf file sizes is the use of fonts. A font consists of a series of characters that are associated with an individual typeface and style. For example, you may have noticed that text written in Times New Roman looks different than text written in Arial. This is because each font has its own unique set of characters that define the look and feel of a document.

Even though a PDF is built from a combination of text and images, it can still be considered an image file because it contains no actual text at all. So when you’re looking at something like a photo that has been saved in the JPEG format, each pixel of color (red, green, blue) takes up three bytes of information. When you multiply this by thousands upon thousands of pixels in one image file: well, that adds up fast!
